The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department at South Dakota State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor faculty position based on the candidate meeting the minimum qualifications, academic experience and service, and qualifications as outlined in the Departmental, College, and University standards.

The Department is within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the position will report to the Head of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD). The department includes the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) and the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM); a 2+2 DVM program in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. The ADRDL includes various diagnostic sections including Molecular Diagnostics, Food Safety, Virology, Bacteriology, Clinical Pathology, Histopathology and Serology. The ADRDL is a member of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), FDA Genome “Trakr” Program, Veterinary Laboratory Investigation Response Network (VetLIRN) and the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) as well as works collaboratively with other faculty in other disciplines. There is also an opportunity to become a member of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Center for Biologics Research and Commercialization, a collaborative center emphasizing probiotic, vaccine and diagnostic assay development. The VBSD offers excellent new or recently renovated facilities along with a highly collaborative work environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of this position are to establish a competitive research program emphasizing molecular and classical virology, epidemiology, host/pathogen interaction, vaccinology or bioinformatics as they relate to production animal disease. It will also assure continuity and development of the diagnostic virology service of the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and will interact with diagnostic clients and scientists in immunology, microbiology, nutrition animal production or other pertinent disciplines. Graduate student and Post doctoral training is expected, along with potential for teaching in Virology related topics for Graduate and/or Veterinary student training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. or DVM plus advanced degree in Biological and/or Veterinary Sciences or related field with a focus on virology or microbiology related to the animal health field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in classical and molecular virology.
  • Refereed publications related to this expertise.
  • Expertise in diagnostic development and experience working with veterinarians.
  • Demonstrated capability for collaborative research.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position, must be authorized to work in the U.S.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-doctoral experience or equivalent and experience in virology, vaccine development and bioinformatics.
  • Translational expertise resulting in intellectual property and technology transfer.
  • Strong knowledge of agriculture and food animal production systems.
  • Experience supervising technical staff..
  • Leadership experience in a diagnostic laboratory
  • Experience obtaining extramural funding.
  • Documentation of broadly collaborative grants and publications.
