The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is offering an exciting career opportunity as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Core Campus Mass Spectrometry Facility. We are seeking candidates with interests in the research area of bioanalytical mass spectrometry (protein characterization), multidisciplinary research collaborations that will complement the existing research programs in the Department and at South Dakota State University, and teaching related to analytical chemistry. Demonstrated skills in managing a service laboratory and in building service-user relations are preferred. This is a 9-month, full-time, benefit eligible, tenure-track position, which is supervised by the Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry with an anticipated start date of August 2023 preferred. The incumbent is also expected to work closely with the Director for Research Support Core Facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will serve as Coordinator of the Core Campus Mass Spectrometry Facility (CCMSF) and will develop an independently funded research program which, in part, supports this facility. The Coordinator will provide the leadership necessary to keep the operation competitive with core facilities at our peer institutions, to help ensure funding success, as well as promote collaboration with other core facilities on campus to maximize research efforts and provide optimum service. Qualified candidates are expected to possess expertise in small molecule mass spectrometry and/or protein characterization, as well as extensive experience with established mass spectrometry approaches and methods for detailed analysis to support the chemical and biochemical disciplines and the life sciences. Successful candidates will also be expected to teach both graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of analytical chemistry. The specific instructional responsibilities will depend upon the candidate’s expertise and may include development of new courses in mass spectrometry, –omics or other areas that strengthen our current curriculum. Along with research and teaching, the incumbent will be required to contribute to the mission of the Department and University, mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, engage in departmental and university service, and establish both internal and external research collaborations. This position consists of 50% scholarly research, 30% teaching, and 20% assigned service as Coordinator of the Core Campus Mass Spectrometry Facility.



Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field completed by first day of employment.
  • Evidence of current scholarly, professional or creative achievement to indicate potential to achieve tenure in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry in the future.
  • Demonstrated experience with bioanalytical mass spectrometry, including protocol development, instrument operation, troubleshooting and data analysis.
  • A strong commitment to and demonstrated success towards the advancement of undergraduate and graduate education with an emphasis on excellence in teaching, research and scholarship.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of audiences and collaborators.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member.
  • Demonstrated potential to plan, develop, and deliver academic courses.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position, must be authorized to work in the U.S.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Postdoctoral or equivalent experience relevant to this position.
  • Demonstrated experience with planning, developing, and delivering academic courses.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated collaboration in developing funding proposals to support new and/or enhanced research.
  • Experience in publishing in the top-quartile of peer-reviewed journals.
