Description

https://careers.bowdoin.edu/postings/9759
The Department of Biology and the Neuroscience Program at Bowdoin College invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position jointly appointed in biology and neuroscience beginning July 1, 2023. The successful candidate will be a neurophysiologist and will teach a comparative physiology lab course and a neurophysiology lab course of their choice. In addition, the newly hired faculty member will alternately contribute to the introductory curriculum of the biology major and offer an upper-level seminar in their area of expertise. We are especially interested in candidates who can offer courses that reflect the interests of our increasingly diverse student body. A breadth of animal models, tools, and questions could be used by the successful candidate. Of particular interest are fields that provide foundational information about biological mechanisms using electrophysiological, molecular, genetic, and /or behavioral approaches. Teaching load is three courses per year, and full-time laboratory instructor support is provided for introductory and intermediate level courses. A PhD by the start of the appointment is required.

Bowdoin requires its faculty to have a promise of long-term successful research and a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. (For a description of inclusive excellence, please consult the following resource: Williams, et. al., Toward a Model of Inclusive Excellence). We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education.

The Bowdoin community warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and those who will enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity. We especially encourage people from historically excluded groups to apply. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of partners and spouses of members of the faculty.

Requirements

Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully funded, year-long junior sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals. Support for teaching, grant-writing, digital initiatives, computing software, and community partnerships in courses is readily available to all faculty. The College also offers robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit: 1) a cover letter that summarizes your scholarly and pedagogical achievements; 2) a research statement that details your scholarly research agenda; 3) a teaching statement that provides evidence of teaching effectiveness; 4) a statement describing your commitment to inclusive excellence in the classroom; 5) a curriculum vitae; and 6) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
