UH Hilo, Academic Affairs, Daniel K Inouye College of Pharmacy, position number 89428, general funds, full-time, permanent, to begin approximately August 2023, pending position clearance and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Affairs: Create an environment that fosters positive faculty, sta, and student morale, instructional excellence, and research productivity. Provide leadership and financial plans to meet the goals of the College’s strategic plan. Lead the College in maintaining ACPE accreditation. Serve as lead facilitator and coordinator of the credit and non- credit academic, curricular, and search programs in the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. Develop, advance, and maintain innovation and excellence in instructional and research programs through the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty and sta. Facilitate the development and adoption of best and promising curricular, instructional delivery, and research practices. Support professional development of faculty and sta. Provide leadership and support for initiatives that foster the dissemination of knowledge and the creation of new knowledge.

Administrative Affairs: Provide eective leadership, direction and support in implementing the vision, mission, strategic plan, and core commitments of the College of Pharmacy. In collaboration with faculty and higher administration, develop, coordinate, and achieve short and long-term goals, objectives, and initiatives consistent with the strategic plans of the College, University, and System. Ensure eective services to students and an exceptional student experience. Provide sound budgetary administration and leadership in financial planning for the College. Ensure that the College’s administration, operations, and programs reflect the diversity of the College’s stakeholders, cultures and thinking. Ensure the maintenance of a positive student culture that integrates rigorous individual and collaborative academic achievement and support.

Fund Raising and External Relations: Initiate and support the development of sustained, strategic academic partnerships and collaborations with academic, community, and business institutions. Foster alumni morale and support via various programs such as nurturing the inclusion of alumni in the College’s programs, activities, strategic planning and implementation processes. Foster relationships with academic, community, health care, industry and business partners to enhance networking and career services for students and alumni. Serves as the College’s primary advocate in interactions with local, state, and federal ocials, and legislators. Works closely with University stakeholders and external resources to promote the growth and prestige of the College. Leverage existing resources and identify new resources to advance college and institutional goals. Encourage and support faculty and sta in the area of grant development. Nurture relationships with potential donors of major gifts; secure appropriate funding from State, Federal, Corporate and private sources. Ensure active and productive annual giving programs through cooperation and collaboration with the UH Foundation. Promote the sharing of the College’s expertise with the community. Ensure the development of a mix of credit and non-credit programs, both general and customized, to serve the need of the constituencies identified in the University and College Mission Statements, to enhance the College’s revenue stream.


Minimum Qualification: An earned Pharm.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctorate in a related discipline. Attained the rank of full professor or have demonstrated a record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment. Five (5) years of progressively responsible academic administrative experience inclusive of strategic, budgetary, and operational planning, at the level of dean, associate dean, department chair, and/or center/institute/program director within an accredited college of pharmacy. A strong, professional presence and excellent interpersonal skills. A leadership style characterized by flexibility, inclusiveness, integrity, and openness that involves and enables faculty and other stakeholders to share in governance. A leadership approach that is collaborative, inclusive and collegial with a deep commitment to listening to and engaging all constituents across the college. Demonstrated commitment to and concrete experience in building and supporting programs that advance diversity and equity (including health equity) and to working among and with multi-cultural populations. A progressive vision for pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education and practice, as well as a broad view of future trends in the health sciences and health professions. Knowledge of contemporary issues and emerging trends relating to academic and professional pharmacy. Ability to build consensus, with a record of problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and eectively with internal and external constituencies. A proven track record of recruitment, retention and development of outstanding faculty, staff and students. Measurable success in improving student outcomes, including the development of innovative curriculum and novel approaches to student success. The ability to balance advocacy for the college with the broader needs of the university. A record of fostering increased research and scholarship.

Desirable Qualification: Seven (7) or more years in an administrative position with duties and responsibilities for academic and fiscal management. Demonstrated experience implementing innovative student success initiatives. Record of mentorship and support for professional growth in faculty, staff, and students. Record of successful fund-raising, including from alumni and corporations. Established national/international reputation in pharmacy practice or pharmaceutical sciences. Experience and/or knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and/or record of establishing a successful research program supported by extramural grant awards. Understanding and appreciation of the unique island and Native Hawaiian culture, along with a commitment to and aptitude for fostering cultural awareness and navigating cultural differences. Familiarity with a unionized environment and/or labor relations.
