Position Summary

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at Indiana University- Bloomington (IU), the flagship campus of the Indiana University and a major comprehensive research university, is accepting applications for a cluster hire that includes two endowed chairs. The Edward A. and Mary Lou Otting Chair in Special Education is an Associate or Full rank with tenure position.

The Special Education program at IU has a long history of leading research and developing programs to meet the needs of schools and communities in a local and global context. The Special Education program seeks to expand its world class faculty with a cluster hire that includes two tenure track faculty members and one clinical faculty member. The program seeks to broaden its expertise in the areas of intellectual disabilities and technological innovations in special education.

We are interested in applications from a diverse pool of scholars with research, teaching, and practical expertise in special education. We seek candidates with experience in addressing issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice in their teaching, service, and research. The successful candidate for the Edward A. and Mary Lou Otting Chair in Special Education position (Associate or Full Professor, with tenure) will be a distinguished Special Education faculty member, with an emphasis on intellectual disabilities. The chairholder will be engaged in research in intellectual disabilities at any point in the lifespan, from preschool through geriatric.

Other responsibilities of the Chair role include:
  • Teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate courses in special education.
  • Conducting lines of inquiry that will lead to publications and other forms of knowledge distribution.
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the department and other units in the School of Education and the University.
  • Supervising doctoral student research and serving on doctoral dissertation committees, for those at the rank of Associate and Full.
  • Seeking opportunities for internal and external funding for scholarship and development projects.

Basic Qualifications

Required qualifications for the Edward A. and Mary Lou Otting Chair
  • An earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field. Candidates should have academic credentials for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and a history of scholarly achievement in the education and training of students as instructors and/or trainers in Special Education, with emphasis on intellectual disabilities.
  • Demonstrated program of scholarship and external funding in special education.
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
